The Sydney Opera House is a performing arts venue located in Sydney, Australia’s New South Wales.
The structure, which was designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon and finished by an Australian architectural team led by Peter Hall, was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on October 20, 1973, sixteen years after Utzon was chosen as the winner of an international design competition in 1957.
In 1958, the New South Wales government, under the leadership of Premier Joseph Cahill, approved the start of construction, with Utzon in charge. The events that followed, such as cost and schedule overruns and the architect’s eventual resignation, frequently overshadow the government’s choice to implement Utzon’s design.
The entirety of Bennelong Point on Sydney Harbour, between Sydney Cove and Farm Cove, is occupied by the skyscraper and its environs. It is close to the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Royal Botanic Garden, and the Sydney central business district.
After being listed on the (now-defunct) Register of the National Estate since 1980, the National Trust of Australia register since 1983, the City of Sydney Heritage Inventory since 2000, the New South Wales State Heritage Register since 2003, and the Australian National Heritage List since 2005, the Sydney Opera House was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. Additionally, the Opera House made it to the finals of the New 7 Wonders of the World campaign list.
