Icehotel – a hotel created entirely from snow and ice

Just over 17 kilometers east of Kiruna in the north of Sweden is Jukkasjärvi where we find the Icehotel. It was founded in 1989 and that’s when the foundation was laid for the original and world-unique invention of today’s Icehotel: a hotel created entirely from snow and ice from the Torne river.
In addition, it is Sweden’s most unique and probably most extensive private art gallery.

Every year during an intense period in November and early December, it is resurrected in a new guise, carefully designed and handcrafted by around 40 artists from around the world.

Since 2016, it is possible to spend the night among ice art at the Icehotel all year round.

The ceremony hall

The ceremony hall is located in the winter hotel. It too returns to the river when spring comes, but the love remains. Resurrected in new vintage every winter and hand sculpted by carefully selected artists, it is one of the most unique wedding venues you can find.

The hotel that is resurrected in a new guise every year.

For five months, it is possible for guests from all over the world to experience the perishable art before it melts down into the adjacent Torne river in the spring and the loan from its mother is returned. In addition to around twenty ice rooms of standard procedure, the winter hotel also houses fifteen unique art suites, all specially designed and handcrafted by artists from all corners of the world.

The ceremony hall

For a unique wedding

The ceremony hall is located in the winter hotel. It too returns to the river when spring comes, but the love remains. Resurrected in new vintages every winter and hand-sculpted by carefully selected artists, it is timeless and one of the most unique wedding venues you can find.

It forms an intimate environment with seating for 35-40 guests, with walls and ceiling made of snow and altar details and benches created from the purest natural ice. The ceremony hall is also suitable for those considering renewing their vows or a solemn blessing ceremony. The hand-sculpted art suites or the majestic pillared hall are other options for a beautiful setting for special occasions, as is the art gallery found in Icehotel 365, available all year round, i.e. even for summer weddings.

“I wanted to create a feeling of being enveloped and protected by ice – a good night’s sleep for all guests.”
– Johan Larsson, the artist who created the standard rooms of ice and snow.
